At least this guy saved those old service-station signs.

(He probably had his choice. Even noticed the many abandoned gas stations along I-40 and other highways in the west? It’s supposedly because cars became more reliable and developed better fuel efficiency, starting in the 1970s with electronic ignition. It killed off unique Western icons of motoring, like Whiting Brothers and Stuckey’s. Soon even major oil company brands like Shamrock and Humble will be fading memories.)

No complaints from me — I think he’s made a really great space there.

Those signs always evoke such a sense of vast open space for me, since you usually encounter them in, as you say, abandoned stations in the middle of nowhere — so the sight of so many of them gathered together is crowded and lonely at the same time.
