Whale watching

3/27/07

On our way back from Molokini, we came across a few whales. To save time, I’ve put them all in one photo.

In all seriousness, we really lucked out here. Whales are pretty commonplace in this season — you can’t look at the water for five minutes without seeing at least a waterspout — but this was special: a mother was teaching a baby whale how to breach, and then an adult male came along and started showing off. This lasted for at least a half hour. Eventually they got tired of jumping and just started flapping their side fins at each other (the two vertical things at the left are the mother and baby next to one another, slapping the water in unison.) Very cool.
